Stormwater in Conyers

Overview

The quality of our streams, rivers, and lakes is threatened by the daily activities of residents and businesses in our area. We know that the more impervious or non-porous the surface we have, the greater the problems caused by flooding, erosion, and accelerated run off. Also consider the amount of litter, pollutants, chemicals, oils, and other impurities that are thrown to the ground and eventually enter our waterways. If not addressed immediately, these problems could result in increased water treatment costs, federal government mandated restoration and improvement costs and a decrease in the quality of our immediate environment.

What is your government doing?

The Mayor, Council and City Manager have addressed this situation and developed a stormwater utility system which would have the least economic affect on city residents, yet still provide a financial means of addressing these pressing issues. You may have noticed the line item 'Stormwater Fee' on your property tax statement this year. This income is being used exclusively to administer and implement stormwater solutions for our city.

In December of 2002, the city identified 31 areas within the City of Conyers in need of immediate attention. This list was prioritized in order of importance regarding public health and safety, number of affected residents, and environmental impact. Click here to review this list or view the FAQs page for more information.

What Can You Do?

Take a look at the 10 Ways to Protect the Environment article. Is anything on that list which you may be able to stop doing or get involved in?

Try to lead by example. Pick up litter and place it in a trash can. Our younger generation learns as much from what they see us do as what we verbally teach them.

Talk to people about our bad habits and try to explain how easy it actually is to become part of the solution and a City of Conyers environmental partner.
