Tourism Expenditures Increase in Conyers, Rockdale County
According to figures recently released by the Travel Association of America (TAA) who conducted an annual study for the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the city of Conyers and Rockdale County ranked 29 out of Georgia’s 159 counties in the state in the level of expenditures among tourists in 2014. Expenditures among tourists in the county were up eight percent over 2013 figures.Locally, tourists spent $126 million in Conyers and Rockdale County in fiscal year 2014. The local tourism industry employed 1,250 people. Tourism generated $4.67 million in state taxes and another $3.64 million in local city and county taxes.
“Domestic overnight travelers to Conyers spend an average of $112 per day while here and day-trippers spend an average of $50 per day, excluding transportation,” said Conyers Convention and Visitors Bureau Tourism Specialist Teri Haler. “Just having an additional 100 visitors per day in our community can have a significant economic impact even at the local level.”
The Georgia Department of Economic Development contracts annually with TAA to provide economic development figures as it relates to the tourism industry in Georgia. Tourism is a $57.1 billion industry for the state.“It is extremely important that we continue investing in our tourism industry, developing new marketing programs and working to bring more visitors to our community by focusing on our attractions: the Georgia International Horse Park, Olde Town Conyers, Monastery of the Holy Spirit, Walk of Heroes Veterans War Memorial, recreational offerings like the PATH Trail and Cherokee Run Golf Club, and Panola Mountain State Park,” said Mayor Randy Mills.
“We have noticed a growing number of visitors to the Conyers Welcome Center who are from outside of Georgia and even from outside of the country visiting Conyers due to filming in and around Olde Town Conyers,” said Haler. “Being home to CW’s “The Originals” and Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow” helps in that both are television series which have a longer life span than movies in attracting visitors. We are fortunate that tourism elements like film-induced tourism contributes to the rebounding of the tourism industry after the past several sluggish years.”
