Shivern Jeter has been named municipal chaplain by the Conyers City Council. The municipal chaplain is a volunteer position and serves to provide compassionate, respectful, and non-coercive emotional and spiritual support to city employees, residents, and families during times of crisis, trauma, loss, disaster, and significant community events.
An initiative of Mayor Connie Alsobrook, the creation of the chaplain position is intended to supplement employee wellness resources, emergency response functions, and community support systems.
A 23-year resident of Conyers, Jeter is pastor of The Way Chaplain Ministries International and teaches chaplaincy training. She is an ordained Baptist minister and is a graduate of the Ohio Diocese of School Biblical Theology and a graduate of the Interdenominational Theology Center at the Morehouse College School of Religion. Jeter has more than 30 years of experience as a chaplain and has served as a Piedmont Rockdale chaplain for 13 years, where she currently serves as an advisory chaplain.
Jeter is founder and executive director of the non-profit organization Foster Care Friends, Inc., serves as a CASA volunteer, a member of the Rockdale County Department of Family and Children Services Board of Directors, and was a member of the Rockdale County Public Schools Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Council.
“I love the ministry of chaplaincy and it’s my passion to serve others in this capacity,” said Chaplain Jeter. “Psalm 37:23 states, ‘The steps of a man are from the Lord, and he establishes him in whose ways he delights.’ I firmly believe God has set my path and journey to this place and season to serve Conyers as chaplain.”
